INTERNAL MEMORANDUM

 

RESEARCH THRUST FOR FOOD ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

 

 

Please see below the research thrust for the Department of Food Engineering:

 

1.         Developing a consolidated bioprocess for the production of biofuels from cellulosic biomass and other waste organic materials

 

2          Developing appropriate technology for the processing and packaging (including cubing) of locust beans

 

3.         Developing appropriate technology for the Production, processing and packaging of milk and dairy products (yoghurt, ice-cream, cheese) including quality control.

 

4.         Developing appropriate technology for the Production of Instant Pounded Yam Flour (IPYF)

5.         Developing appropriate technology for the Processing, formulation and packaging of juice products

6.         Developing appropriate technology for the Production and processing of different agricultural products

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Entry Requirements

(i)        Unified Tertiary Matriculations (UTME) Candidates:

UTME Candidates are required to obtain “O” Level credits in five subjects which include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language, and Biology or any one of the following subjects Agricultural Science, Further Mathematics and Technical Drawing. It is also desirable for candidates to have Further Mathematics and Technical Drawing at credit levels. Such Candidates shall have added advantage. Candidates are also required to have an acceptable pass in UTME. The UTME subjects are Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. In addition, such Candidates must meet the cut-off mark in the University Post Jamb Examination. 

 

(ii)       Direct Entry (DE) Candidates into 200 Level:

In addition to (i) above, DE Candidates are required to have A- Level / IJMB or approved equivalent pass in Mathematics ( Pure, Applied or Pure and Applied), Physics and Chemistry or a national Diploma in Agricultural Engineering or a relevant Engineering discipline at distinction or Upper Credit level from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology plus at least one year Post ND Experience.

 

(iii)      Direct Entry (DE) Candidates into 300 Level:

In addition to (i) above, DE Candidates in this category are required to possess a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Agricultural Engineering or a relevant Engineering Discipline, at distinction or Upper Credit level from a recognized Polytechnic or a college of Technology.Same as for Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering programme

 

(iv)      Other Requirements

            As specified in JAMB Brochure.

 

MINIMUM DURATION

The programme will run on full-time basis for a minimum of ten (10) semesters for UME students and minimum of eight (8) semesters for Direct Entry students. The students will be expected to go for industrial training for a semester in 400 level. A maximum of fourteen (14) semesters for UME students and twelve (12) semesters for Direct Entry students is allowed. 

 

 

HEAD, FOOD ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT, UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN

Engineer Dr. MusliuOlusholaSunmonu, is a storage and process Engineer whose research interest is in the area of design and development of post-harvest technologies and modeling of post-harvest systems. His research focus is on Food Storage and Packaging; Food Preservation.

Dr. Sunmonu won a scholarship to attend an international training programme at practical training centre, Oenkerk, Neatherlands in 2010 fully sponsored by the Dutch government. He has also attended many international conferences in India, United Arab Emirates (Dubai) and Netherlands among others. He has well over 60 publications in peer-reviewed National and International Journals. Dr. Sunmonu also belongs to many learned professional bodies like the American Society of agricultural and biological Engineers (ASABE), Nigeria Institution of Agricultural engineers (NIAE) and Council for the Regulation of Engineers in Nigeria (COREN).
