HISTORY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERIUNG DEPARTMENT
The Department of Mechanical Engineering came into existence at the University of Ilorin in October 1978 with enrolment of students in the preliminary year (now called 100 Level) and appointment of a Professor as Head of Department. Eleven students were graduated in the first set in 1982/83 session, while over 2500 students have graduated from the Department till date. The Department is located at the main campus of University of Ilorin. The Head of Department’s office and lecturers’ offices are in Block 8. The laboratories, wooden and material workshops are in Block 7. The Mechanical Engineering Workshop is in Block 9.
PHYLOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMME
The undergraduate programme is designed to take students through rigorous training to prepare them as engineers for professional practice in a broad range of fields including: teaching, research, development, design, testing, construction, operation, sales and management.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The objectives of the Mechanical Engineering program are in agreement with the philosophy of the University of Ilorin which are:
(i) To produce graduates in Mechanical Engineering that will be well qualified to develop, operate and maintain the nation’s Engineering infrastructure and utility services.
(ii) To initiate and carry out mechanical engineering designs, and
(iii) To engage in industrial management and pursue research and developments in special areas of thermofluids, production and design.
OUTCOMES OF THE PROGRAMME
The Department of Mechanical Engineering has been able to produce graduates who have
(i) The ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and Engineering.
(ii) The ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
(iii) The ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.
(iv) The ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams.
(v) The ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.
(vi) The understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
(vii) The ability to communicate effectively.
(viii) The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental and societal context.
(ix) The recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning.
(x) The Knowledge of contemporary issues.
(xi) The ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
Mechanical Engineering Students have access to Applied Heat Laboratory, Corrosion Laboratory, Central workshop which consist of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) unit, Convectional Machining section, Welding and Fabrication section and Bench-work section. There is also a Low/High Speed Wind Tunnel, Materials and Metallurgy Laboratory, Metrology Laboratory, Skill-G Laboratory, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Laboratory. Mechanical engineering students have access to several laboratory facilities in the faculty. Computer laboratories exist in the faculty for the training of students. Wireless internet services also exist in the departmental office’s area. Students are encouraged to avail themselves of these opportunities.
(xi) There are three modes of admission into the Bachelor of Engineering Programme in Mechanical Engineering, these are: Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination (UTME/JAMB), Direct Entry and Remedial (Pre-degree). The minimum entry requirements into the department are as follows;
I. Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination (UTME) Candidates:
UTME candidates are required to obtain “O” Level credits in five subjects which should include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language, and any other subject. It is an added advantage for candidates that passed Further Mathematics and Technical Drawing at credit levels. Candidates are also required to have an acceptable score in UTME. The UTME subjects are English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. In addition, such candidates must meet the cut-off mark in the University Post Jamb Examination.
II. Direct Entry (DE) Candidates into 200 Level:
In addition to (i) above, DE candidates are required to have A- Level / IJMB/JUPEB or approved equivalent pass in Mathematics (Pure, Applied or Pure and Applied), Physics and Chemistry or a National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering and other relevant Engineering discipline at distinction or Upper Credit level from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology plus at least one year Post ND Experience. Candidates with First degree from Physical Sciences of not less than Second Class Lower Honours may be admitted into 200 Level.
I. Direct Entry (DE) Candidates into 300 Level:
In addition to (i) and (ii) above, DE Candidates in this category are required to possess a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering or a relevant Engineering Discipline, at distinction or Upper Credit level from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology. Candidates with First degree in other engineering discipline may be admitted into 300 level.
II. Remedial/Pre-degree Programmes
An applicant must possess SSCE/GCE/NECO/NABTEB/Equivalent with credit level passes in English language, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. The programme is open only to candidates from the catchment areas of University of Ilorin.
Other conditions to note;
(i) Credits/Passes in ‘A’ Level subjects cannot be used as substitutes for failures for the respective ‘O’ Level subjects;
(ii) General Paper at Higher School Certificate (H.S.C) or in any other examination will not be accepted as substitutes for English Language;
(iii) A credit pass in English Language of the IJMB at the ‘O’ level is acceptable as equivalent to SSCE/GCE ‘O’ level for admission purpose.
(iv) Computer based Post UTME test is an additional requirement for admission.
Duration of Programme
The programme will run on full-time basis for a minimum of ten (10) and maximum of fourteen (14) semesters for UTME and Remedial students; minimum of eight (8) and maximum of twelve (12) semesters for 200 Level Direct Entry students and minimum of six (6) and a maximum of ten (10) semesters for 300 Level Direct Entry Students. The students will be expected to go for twelve (12) weeks industrial training at the end of 300 Level and for the entire second semester in 400 level.

In addition to O’Level and Post-UTME requirements, candidates must have either of the following:
(i) A’Level IJMB or approved equivalent Pass in Mathematics, (Pure or/and Applied), Physics, and Chemistry with a minimum of 10 points.
(ii) OND (Upper Credit) in Relevant Discipline with at least one year post diploma experience.
UTME candidates are required to obtain O’Level credits in Five (5) subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other relevant subject.
English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
In addition to O’Level and Post-UTME requirements, candidates with any of the following qualifications may be considered:
(i) First Degree from Physical Sciences at Second Class Lower Division may be admitted into 200 Level.
(ii) HND in relevant Engineering discipline at Distinction or Upper Credits level from recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology after NYSC may be considered for upgrading to 300 Level.
(iii) First Degree Honours in Engineering discipline may be admitted into 300 Level of any other Engineering programme.
Candidate who passed Further Mathematics and Technical Drawing at Credit levels stand at an advantage.
University of Ilorin mechanical engineering program is recognized and accredited by Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) as well as National Universities Commission (NUC) in the Country. Students offering the mechanical engineering curriculum can opt for one of the three emphasized areas: production (Manufacturing) option, Design option and Thermofluids option. Mechanical engineering curriculum at University of Ilorin is designed to provide a rigorous background in engineering fundamentals during the first three years with some specialization in the fourth year. Mechanical engineering students use state-of-the-art laboratories, computers and software in the final year courses to prepare them for future challenges.
